This weekend the AFL changed the logo on their headquarters to read ‘YES’ in support of marriage equality.
The gesture was met with a warm response from the LGBT community and all those in favour of marriage equality -- but critics, including Footy Show presenter Sam Newman, accused the organisation of overstepping its mark.
Sign our petition to show the AFL you think they’re doing the right thing, and support their endorsement of marriage equality!
AFL: thank you for coming out in support of marriage equality!
If we can get 10,000 SumOfUs members to sign our petition to thank the AFL for their support of marriage equality, we’ll deliver it to them to show our support!
After Sam Newman used the highlights show to to condemn the AFL’s public endorsement, his guest countered that the organisation has as much right as church groups and national papers to enter the debate on the referendum.
Yesterday the AFL headquarters were forced to evacuate after staff received an ‘unspecified threat’ -- although it remains unclear whether this was related to their support for marriage equality.
We can’t let the critics win: The AFL is well within its rights to show its support for the proposal for marriage equality. If good people don’t stand up and make their voices heard, they could be drowned out by a vocal minority who stand in opposition to justice.
Australians will vote next month on on the issue -- but MPs are not bound by the public’s decision in their own vote soon after.
That’s why it’s so important for us to stand in solidarity with the AFL, and let our leaders know that the people are on their side when it comes to LGBT rights -- which is such an important and personal issue to so many Australians.
Say thank you to the AFL for supporting marriage equality!
