Big polluters like Chevron are drilling essentially for free because of a broken tax regime. You can help make oil and gas companies pay their fair share of tax by making a quick and easy submission telling the government to fix the petroleum resource rent tax (PRRT).
You don't have to be an expert! You can use the pre-filled submission, and edit it if you like. Just make sure you're polite. Here are some quick talking points if you want to personalise your submission:
- The petroleum resource rent tax is generating no new revenue - it is no longer functioning in the best interests of the Australian people.
- The PRRT needs significant reform. Oil and gas companies are pushing back on reform because they want to drill for free. We can't let them.
- Liquified natural gas (LNG) will soon compete with iron ore to become Australia's largest export.
- But various analyses show that the primary tax on LNG, the PRRT, will not collect any new revenue for decades to come.
- Qatar will raise $26.6 billion in royalty revenue from LNG in 2021, while we'll collect zero in PRRT from our LNG exports.
- As an example, Chevron's Gorgon project - one of the largest natural gas projects in the world - will not pay any resource tax at today's prices, according to the industry's own analysis.
- We need to stop this multinational tax avoidance by reforming the PRRT.
And that's it! Thanks for speaking up.
