Shopify’s customers and shop owners are incredibly important and valuable to Shopify -- and we know that them hearing from you directly will carry an incredible amount of weight and impact --and could be what makes the CEO decide to finally ditch Breitbart once and for all.
Here's the letter we will send to Shopify executives on your behalf:
As Shopify customers, we are disappointed with your decision to continue doing business with Breitbart News.
Breitbart is not just any client, it is a platform for white nationalists with ambitions to export hateful rhetoric around the world. You’ve argued that Shopify is a "neutral" platform, but the current controversy your company is facing on social media, in the media and internally from your own employees proves that there is no such thing as a neutral platform anymore. Shopify cannot remain "neutral" doing business with Breitbart -- and furthermore, because Shopify is profiting directly from white nationalism and hate, you have effectively already chosen a side.
Profiting off of hate speech isn’t the same as protecting "free speech". Your own terms of service state that you have the right to shut down online stores that you determine are “unlawful, offensive, threatening, libelous, defamatory, pornographic, obscene or otherwise objectionable.” You are simply choosing not to enforce your own policies.
It is not good enough to claim that you don’t approve of Breitbart. Your decision to continue doing business with it -- and in such a public way -- is an act of blatant disregard to the people who are and will be most affected by Trump’s policies, and reflects poorly on your company.
As customers, these are not values we embrace nor want to be associated with.
As users of your platform, we believe you are choosing the wrong side and may decide to take our services elsewhere. We stand with over 135,000 people who’ve signed a petition calling for Shopify to end its business relationship with Breitbart.
We will be watching to make sure you make the right decision against bigotry and hate.
